Summer 2009
On January 24, 2009 seven youth traveled to Roanoke to join others from the diocese to pack over 71,000 shelf-stable meals for Stop Hunger Now. The meals will be distributed to the hungry around the world.
On December 14, 2008, the youth provided a spaghetti lunch to benefit Stop Hunger Now. Over $850 were raised for this hunger relief organization.
During a few weeks in the summer and fall of 2008, a group from Grace worked with Grace House to re-roof and repair the home of an elderly widow in Dante, Virginia. The house is still not habitable, but the hope is that a spring program will finally return her to her home.
In response to the Gateway men's shelter losing funding, the vestry voted to donate $1,000 to this vital program. Cathy, our priest, wrote a letter challenging other churches which routinely provide meals to match our contribution. In addition, we sponsored a benefit harp concert on August 17, 2008.
The youth of Grace Memorial raised over $500 in donations by making sub sandwiches for the congregation on April 29, 2007. The money was given to the Episcopal campus ministry at Virginia Tech.
The Lynchburg area Episcopal churches joined together in sponsering a U2charist featuring the music of U2 and a message from Bono on April 22, 2007. Food items were collected for local area food banks, and an offering was collected for Bread for the World. Participants signed a banner for the Virginia Tech community.
